Meet the Wildlife South Africa’s National Parks

South Africa is one of the most beautiful and diverse countries on earth. Known for rich culture with deep historical roots, impressive scenery, and fascinating wildlife, the country is a dream location for any adventurous traveler. If you want to view and interact with wildlife in the country, then you’ll absolutely have to visit one of the many National Park locations. Whether you visit parks like the Kruger National Park in the north east, or the Mountain Zebra National Park in the Eastern Cape area, you’ll get the most out of your trip when you know the wildlife to look for while out on your adventure.

African Elephant (Bush and Forest Species) As far as large game goes, the African Elephant is undoubtedly the most impressive, and the most well known. Elephants are spectacular to watch in the wild, especially in the way that they interact with their herds and their young. Some National Park tours offer elephant riding safaris, such as the ones offered in the Addo Elephant National Park.

African Lion

Majestic, iconic, often ferocious, and deserving of respect at all times, the African Lion is perhaps the jewel of all South African wildlife. Seeing lions in their natural habitat is a humbling experience, and one that should not be missed by anyone who is visiting a South African National Parks.

White Rhino

It was once believed that the White Rhino was just years away from complete extinction, but with concentrated conservation efforts, the species is now growing in numbers in some of the parks, such as the Kruger National Park. Sadly, the closely related Black Rhino is now at risk, and is considered to be critically endangered.

Big Cats are always a huge attraction for safari goers, and the leopard is one of the rarer kinds in South Africa. While the entire southern region of South Africa was once a hospitable habitatfor these large cats, they are now limited to small regions near the cape,  and in the north of the country.

These intriguing creatures share much with domesticated horses, although they have their own unique personalities, and of course they also have their dazzling black and white stripes. Zebra are relatively common in all conservation areas, although there are some species that can only be seen in certain locations. Mountain Zebra National Park is the best place to see the threatened species that shares its namesake with the park.

Clawless Otter

It is easy to forget that South Africa is home to such diverse wildlife, especially when so much emphasis is placed on the big five game creatures and the big cats. However, when you start to look at some of the less well known creatures, you can find some truly interesting examples. One of these is the Clawless Otter. This unique species can be found all across eastern and southern South Africa.

Whenever visiting a South African National Park, ask your safari guide for information on the wildlife in the area, and be aware of any emergency procedures and safety information. With the right preparation, you’ll be set to enjoy your time spent observing some of the animals listed above, and other impressive African creatures like giraffes, hippopotami, cheetahs, and many others.
